This
seedling has two leaves exposed and the third leaf can be seen.
This is an important time for a wheat seedling. It needs to grow
rapidly, but temperatures can drop quickly this time of year. Let’s
look a little closer at a seedling.
I pulled the oldest
leaf back and you can see this little sprout. This
little sprout is called a tiller. This tiller will continue to
grow and develop leaves. A tiller is another stem that the plant
produces that will eventually produce grain (but I’m getting
ahead of myself again). The plant develops tillers when conditions
will support more stems. It is a way for the plant to
"thicken-up". You’ll see what I mean in the near
future.
