Research on CRP Lands to Produce Biomass for Feed StocksKansas has about 2 ½ million acres of Conservation Reserve Program lands. CRP is a program that takes land out of crop production and puts it into permanent grassland in order to conserve soil and reduce surface water runoff.
Keith Harmony, Range Scientist for the Agricultural Research Center in Hays is conducting research that looks at different management objectives and the potential of the CRP lands to produce biomass for feed stocks. Project Good NeighborKansas growers of sensitive and organic crops are increasingly concerned about drift damage from commonly used pesticides. Bill Wood, Director of the Douglas County Extension Office created Project Good Neighbor to help reduce the risk of pesticide drift damage. Grains for HopeFollowing the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti, a group of Kansas high school students took their school project, Grains for Hope, and focused their attention on the needs of those who survived the natural disaster. Sabetha High School students acquired various grain flours and made a product that is easily reconstituted with water and then ready-to-eat, perfect for those in Haiti with little if any food. Kansas State University, along with Wenger Manufacturing and XIM Consulting, assisted the students with the extrusion process where 6,000 pounds of the product was made and then shipped to the country of Haiti. K-State's Nick Levendofsky shares his interviews with those involved in the project.

K-State PhD Recipient Recognized For Innovative DissertationMartha Giraldo, a research associate in the Department of Plant Pathology, was recently recognized for her innovative use of electronic media in her doctoral dissertation. She is one of three recipients, worldwide, of this year's Innovative ETD Award from the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
