K-State Animal Sciences Faculty Member Honored

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University faculty member, Terry Houser, has been named a recipient of the American Meat Science Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award. He will be honored at the AMSA’s Reciprocal Meat Conference June 18 in Auburn, Ala.

Houser, an associate professor in K-State’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, teaches and conducts research primarily in adding value to meat and the effect of livestock diet on meat quality.

“Dr. Houser’s published and proprietary research has directly improved color stability and eye appeal of beef and pork products produced in Kansas and surrounding states, which are marketed nationwide,” stated the AMSA in announcing the award. “He, in collaboration with other Kansas State researchers, was asked by the National Pork Board and American Meat Institute Foundation to benchmark the amount of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) found in a large number of commercially-available meat products and to research possible mitigation strategies to decrease HCA formation.”

As a result, Houser and the K-State team are investigating new mitigation strategies to decrease HCA formation, and have published several peer-reviewed articles on the subject.

Two other researchers, Christy Bratcher of Auburn University, and Jeffrey Sindelar of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will also receive AMSA’s Distinguished Achievement awards.
