Dynamic Duo of Kansas 4-H Geology Project Honored

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Will and Pat Gilliland, of Topeka, Kan., are the dynamic duo of the 4-H geology project at both the local and state level.

To recognize them for their many years of hard work and dedication to youth and the 4-H program, the Kansas 4-H Youth Development Program is proud to announce the Gillilands as recipients of the 2013 4-H Distinguished Service Award.

"The award, one of three presented in the state this year, will be presented at the Kansas 4-H Emerald Circle Banquet held in Manhattan, Kan., on May 30,” said Pam Van Horn, K-State Research and Extension state 4-H specialist and 4-H awards coordinator.

More than 20 years ago, soon after their children joined the local 4-H program, the Gilliland’s became the Shawnee County geology leaders.  They have been holding monthly meetings ever since, often involving youth from surrounding counties.

In recent years, the Gilliland’s have served on the State 4-H Geology Action Team and helped establish a 4-H Geology Scholarship fund.

Instrumental in the development of the Kansas 4-H Geology Leader’s Notebook, Pat Gilliland reviewed the lessons and worked endlessly with the state 4-H office and extension editors until the notebook was published in 2007.

The Gilliland’s co-plan and facilitate annual geology field trips all over the state of Kansas.  Held in June, these trips are attended by 300 to 500 youth, parents and leaders annually.
