1) Hays Horticulture Evening Event on Aug. 30 to Move Indoors


HAYS, Kan. – Kansas State University’s Agriculture Research Center at Hays will host its 2012 Evening Horticulture Event on Thursday, Aug. 30. A change this year is that the whole event will be held in the research center’s air-conditioned auditorium due to this summer’s hot, dry weather. The center is located at 1232 240th Ave. in Hays.

Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the auditorium. The program will run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Presentation topics will include:

·        Prairie Star annual flower trials;

·        Turfgrass issues;

·        Tomato and pepper performance trials; and

·        Insect issues – lawn and garden.



A garden photography exhibit is included and K-State Research and Extension specialists will be on hand to discuss horticulture topics on an informal basis.

2)  New Guides Free, Make Food Safety Easy

 

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A new food safety series is intended to help at-risk populations reduce risks from foodborne illness.

According to Karen Blakeslee, a K-State Research and Extension food scientist, the new publications include:

* Food Safety for Pregnant Women;

* Food Safety for Older Adults;

* Food Safety for People with Diabetes;

* Food Safety for People with Cancer;

* Food Safety for People with HIV/AIDS, and

* Food Safety for Transplant Recipients.


Each of the six 24-page publications includes food safety basics, easy-to-read charts, checklists identifying dos and don’ts, and lists of symptoms to help identify foodborne illness and know when to seek treatment, Blakeslee said.


The food safety push reflects the cooperative effort of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration.
