Bio-Rad iCycler iQ Real-Time PCR


Real-time PCR is the ability to monitor the progress of the PCR as it occurs (i.e., in real time). Data is therefore collected throughout the PCR process, rather than at the end of the PCR. This is usually achieved by monitoring changes in fluorescence within the PCR tube. The higher the starting copy number of the nucleic acid target, the sooner a significant increase in fluorescence is observed. With the variety of detection chemistries, number of platforms, and analytical methods available, the real-time PCR has found applications in many branches of biological science, such as gene expression analysis, mutation detection, the diagnosis of infectious disease, human genetic testing, etc.
The facility houses a Bio-Rad iCycler real-time PCR system, that allows to perform 96-reaction per run, and can accommodate different detection chemistries including SYBR Green, Taqman, Molecular Beacon, and Scorpion. Assistance in real-time PCR primer design using Beacon Designer, experimental design, experimental procedure, and data analysis is available through personal training, or real-time PCR workshop (PLPTH 785).
