dictoyledon plant Soybeans, sunflowers and canola are broadleaf crops.  All broadleaf crops are dicotyledons.  What is a dicotyledon?  Di means two and a cotyledon is a specialized leaf.  As you can see, soybeans have two cotyledons.  For broadleaf crops, the cotyledons are used for germination and early development of the plant.

monoctyledon Wheat, corn and grain sorghum are grassy crops and are monocotyledons.  What is a monocotyledon?  Mono means one and a cotyledon is a specialized leaf.  For grassy crops, the cotyledon is used below ground as a shield for the emerging shoot.  The endosperm also remains below ground and is the energy source for germination and early seedling development.
