Wheat varieties with long coleoptiles are more likely to emerge when planted deeply enough to reach soil moisture from past rainfall. This publication includes a table of coleoptile lengths for many Kansas wheat varieties. A germinating plant's shoot needs protection from a coleoptile structure until the first leaf reaches the soil surface. 4 pages, color.
