Wheat is the most widely grown crop in Kansas and one of the
most important crops grown world wide. Kansas is the number one
wheat producing state in the country. We eat wheat in some form
almost every day. But have you ever thought about where wheat
comes from or how it grows as you are eating a peanut butter and
jelly sandwich, or while making a cake, or eating pancakes?
The purpose of this web page is to have fun while watching
wheat grow throughout the year. We will see how the soil is
prepared for planting, see a drill plant the seed, and then we
will see the wheat seedling emerge from the soil and watch it
grow the rest of the year. I have picked a spot in a wheat field
on the Agronomy Farm north of Manhattan to watch through the
year. That way we can see how the same plants have changed from
the last time.
